This is the reason we let the free membership levels to remain - because they didn't intend to dissuade their customers. As we've seen, it definitely worked OSRS Gold, as its popularity only increased. But, as The First 20 Years explains, RuneScape didn't reach its peak without making some errors at some point.
Some of us who played the game daily in the 2000s were likely to be unable to play the game's first release called RuneScape Classic. Players could attack anyone even their opponents. The graphics were not basic. It could only accommodate around 1,200 players at a time without crash.
The games can't make mistakes today. Titanfall 2 isn't getting the resources it needs to fix its online play on PC. Anthem was scrapped in the middle of the development process of its big overhaul. Fable Legends was canned before it was even able to launch. Now, you have to play Fortnite or perish trying.
A developer's enthusiasm can be totally irrelevant to a publisher, too. Dragon Age 4 has been delayed twice because of higher-up interference constantly dictating the game's direction. Metal Gear players that clearly prefer one-player games, got the multiplayer game Metal Gear Survive in 2018. Then we don't even go into the many subsidiary games Activision Blizzard wastes on constant Call of Duty development.
Thank goodness Jagex began its existence at a time that was when it could be independent. If the player base had begun to stagnate in the late 2000s it is likely that a publisher would have pulled the plug on the entire thing. The truth is Cheap RuneScape Gold, Raven Software started laying people off in the midst of Warzone was making billions, and even success could spell disaster for the people who created the game. |
